The Vendy Awards Website

Posted by Greg T. on October 3rd, 2009 in Uncategorized

The 2009 Vendy Awards, a huge street vendor cookoff-fundraiser, was held this past weekend.  For the last two years I’ve been their web dude–designing and developing the site and then updating throughout the year.  I’m wasn’t able to attend on account of a last minute trip to Puerto Rico, but the great folks over at Serious Eats did a wonderful job of documenting it.

If you’re ever in need of a jack-of-all-trades web consultant/designer/developer, drop me an email at gregtakayama@gmail.com.

Notes on Going to the Daily Show with Jon Stewart

Posted by Greg T. on July 23rd, 2009 in Uncategorized

On Monday, Steph, Odd, Kalina and I went to the Daily Show.  The show was awesome with NBC Nightly News’s Brian Williams as the guest and a once in a blue moon appearance by Lewis Black.

Here’s the meat of it–a great interview / sparring with Brian Willaims:

Before going to the show, there were a number of uncertainties to which we did not have answers until after the show, so I thought I’d compile my notes:

  • Reservations can be made through the Daily Show website. You can request to reserve up to four tickets.  For the July 20th show, we reserved on February 16th.
  • Once you arrive at the studio, you get to wait in line on the sidewalk outside the theater, located here.  There’s a large awning to keep the sun off your back.  We arrived at 3pm and were 10th in line in what would be a line of about 200 people (I came a tad later after picking up Azuri falafel for everyone).  At 5:30pm (or sometimes 4:30), ushers handed out numbered cards that denote your place in line and whether you have a reserved seat or whether you’re standby.
  • The line runs back and forth along the length of the building, about 200 people long.  If it grows longer, it curves around the the corner of the block and goes down 52nd st. The studio seemed to fit about 200 people (after VIP’s) so if you’re in line past the tensa-barriers you probably won’t get in.
  • At 6:30pm, you enter the building, get security checked, metal detected.  You have to check your camera if you have one.  You can bring handbags and backpacks into the studio.  You can bring food in as well as long as you don’t take it out (and/or eat it).  I had a banana, falafel and vitamin water in my bag.
  • By 7pm, you’re seated in the studio (which, like all TV studios, is much smaller in real life).
  • A comedian comes out and warms up the audience for 10 minutes.
  • Jon Stewart comes out before the show to say hi, crack some jokes and field questions.  One person’s question was, “Did you know your fly is down?”  Ha.  He was pretty embarrassed and said that in 10 years of the show he’d never left his fly down.
  • The show is shot in the same timing as it airs and you’re done by 8pm.

Afterwards we went to Keen’s and indulged in filet mignon and lobster.  A fun fun evening.

An NYC Taxi Cop Car

Posted by Greg T. on February 11th, 2009 in Nerd Stuff, New York, Videos

I was walking home from work, crossing 3rd Ave. at St. Marks and saw something strange. An NYC Taxi had pulled someone over. I’ve become numb to sirens, flashing lights, loud noises or other city static but there was something odd about this situation. There were several guys in between the two cars, but none of them appeared to be cops. Had this taxi driver modded his cab to give people who cut him off a scare? I went into a Starbucks to get a closer look. The guys were actually under cover cops…like in the movies. They were dressed in street clothes but had their badges on a chain around their neck (visible in the video). They gave the guy a ticket and that was that. You can see them drive off in the video, note the lack of Taxi ID/Duty light on the roof.

MOMA Mondays

Posted by Greg T. on February 10th, 2009 in New York

The MOMA has started something they call MOMA Mondays–they’re open until 8:45, have a cash bar, DJ, and there are no strollers or kids allowed…or at least that’s what I enjoy about it. I’m going to make use of my membership by going to every MOMA Monday.

Here’s a section of photos from Tehching Hsieh’s “Performance 1.”

Being sick in NYC isn’t that bad…

Posted by Greg T. on January 28th, 2009 in New York

Day 3 of being sick. I haven’t left the apartment in 3 days, I’m praying that I don’t wake up tomorrow feeling like my joints are being electrocuted. But being sick in NYC isn’t so bad. I got way too much delivery from Veselka. Christian was kind enough to pick me up a bunch of naked juices from the bodega. I think I’ve kicked my caffeine addiction on account of not having had anything caffeinated since Sunday’s awesomeness. Ok, hoping tomorrow is less fluey.

It also snowed and since melted while I was under quarantine. When it snows in the city it’s somewhat of a paradox because it’s first really beautiful then it’s chillingly sloppy.

Pipilotti Rist: Pour Your Body Out (7354 Cubic Meters) at the MOMA

Posted by Greg T. on January 24th, 2009 in New York, Videos

I renewed my membership to the MOMA. My mom got me a membership to the Met, which is awesome (thanks mom!) except that the Met is a “suggested donation” of $20 aka $1 per visit. I’m going to go to the Moma at least once a month, perhaps for their Monday cocktail, open til 8:45pm nights.

Here’s Pipilotti Rist’s Pour Your Body Out (7354 Cubic Meters):

This is how the economy feels

Posted by Greg T. on January 9th, 2009 in New York, Videos

Like a bull in a way-too-small cage, bored, sitting on some hay, on display–people wondering if it’ll do anything. This guy was out in front of the stock exchange yesterday.
