Notes on Going to the Daily Show with Jon Stewart

Posted by Greg T. on July 23rd, 2009 in Uncategorized. 3 Comments »

On Monday, Steph, Odd, Kalina and I went to the Daily Show.  The show was awesome with NBC Nightly News’s Brian Williams as the guest and a once in a blue moon appearance by Lewis Black.

Here’s the meat of it–a great interview / sparring with Brian Willaims:

Before going to the show, there were a number of uncertainties to which we did not have answers until after the show, so I thought I’d compile my notes:

  • Reservations can be made through the Daily Show website. You can request to reserve up to four tickets.  For the July 20th show, we reserved on February 16th.
  • Once you arrive at the studio, you get to wait in line on the sidewalk outside the theater, located here.  There’s a large awning to keep the sun off your back.  We arrived at 3pm and were 10th in line in what would be a line of about 200 people (I came a tad later after picking up Azuri falafel for everyone).  At 5:30pm (or sometimes 4:30), ushers handed out numbered cards that denote your place in line and whether you have a reserved seat or whether you’re standby.
  • The line runs back and forth along the length of the building, about 200 people long.  If it grows longer, it curves around the the corner of the block and goes down 52nd st. The studio seemed to fit about 200 people (after VIP’s) so if you’re in line past the tensa-barriers you probably won’t get in.
  • At 6:30pm, you enter the building, get security checked, metal detected.  You have to check your camera if you have one.  You can bring handbags and backpacks into the studio.  You can bring food in as well as long as you don’t take it out (and/or eat it).  I had a banana, falafel and vitamin water in my bag.
  • By 7pm, you’re seated in the studio (which, like all TV studios, is much smaller in real life).
  • A comedian comes out and warms up the audience for 10 minutes.
  • Jon Stewart comes out before the show to say hi, crack some jokes and field questions.  One person’s question was, “Did you know your fly is down?”  Ha.  He was pretty embarrassed and said that in 10 years of the show he’d never left his fly down.
  • The show is shot in the same timing as it airs and you’re done by 8pm.

Afterwards we went to Keen’s and indulged in filet mignon and lobster.  A fun fun evening.

Google Chrome for Mac

Posted by Greg T. on July 17th, 2009 in Uncategorized. No Comments »

Small Update:  There is a pretty good pre-release version of Chrome (not Chromium) for Mac out right now.  Download here.

I was all too nerdily excited when Google Chrome (the browser), was released in September of last year by way of comic book.  I have a thing for keyboard shortcuts and efficiency of movement when using a computer and Chrome has a ton of excellent command line-esque functionality.  I also use as many different browsers as possible in order to log into various Gmail accounts as well as spread the system load over several different processes (Firefox gets bogged down with 20 tabs).  The major downside to Chrome, however, was that it was only available for Windows.  Ughh.

I recently found out about the open source project behind some of the Chrome code, notably Chrome for Linux and Mac.  Oh boy!  While it’s not an official release, it’s stable and full featured enough that I’m going to give it make it a daily browser.

Latest builds can be downloaded from the Chromium site.

Update 7/23: Chrome doesn’t yet support vital web plugins such as Flash…just fyi.

Scrabble (on the iPhone)

Posted by Greg T. on July 14th, 2009 in Uncategorized. 4 Comments »

I’ve taken up playing Scrabble on my iPhone.  I’ve never been a scrabble player but I find the lexical stimulation pretty enticing.  I also beat a braggishly skilled scrabble player (“I’ve been playing since high school!!”).  I bought the actual board game this past weekend at Target (in Jersey).  So yeah, four thumbs up for Scrabble on the iPhone ($4.99 from the app store).

Heh heh. 12 points.

An Upcoming Photo Blog

Now that I’ve redone my blog…I can move onto another interesting side project.  It’ll take advantage of browsers’ bicubic image resizing and will have large large photos.  Coming soon…

How to Save $200 on your (Time Warner) Cable Bill

Posted by Greg T. on July 12th, 2009 in Nerd Stuff, New York. No Comments »

On recent Time Warner Cable bill I noticed that our internet service had gone from $29.95 to $44.95. That’s a 50% increase. That’s a lot. So I called up Time Warner, guns blazing, ready for a prickly yet all too oft’ exchange with their customer service department.

The customer service rep told me that our introductory high speed internet deal of $29.95 per month had expired and that our bill had gone up to their standard rate. I explained to her that the increase made me unhappy…because it did. She said that she could downgrade us to a $29.95 package, but it would be slower – something like 512kbps up/1.5mbps down. Considering that the internetz is like my lifeline, I wasn’t about to settle for budget internet. I dropped the V-word, then the D-word…and then the S-word. Verizon…DSL…Switch. She says, “ok, hold on sec, I need to transfer you to a different department.”

After a 5 minute wait on hold, someone picks up: “This is Alicia in retention, can I have your account number?” Success. Alicia says very bluntly and without a fight, “I can give you your introductory deal price of $29.95 a month for 13 months, effective next billing cycle.”

“Sounds good, sign me up!”

So, if you want to save a some scrilla on your cable bill, all you have to do is ask. =)

Blog Relaunch!

Posted by Greg T. on July 12th, 2009 in Uncategorized. 2 Comments »

I finally got around to redesigning and rebuilding my blog.  Awesome.

newblog

A few notes on how things work:

  • Everything is running on WordPress (2.8.1)
  • I built the WordPress theme from scratch, using Kubrick as a guide.
  • I used the YUI CSS framework to help layout a grid, normalize browser inconsistencies and to make development a tad bit easier.
  • I’m also using a few WordPress plugins:  Twitter Widget Pro, Flickr Photo Album and WordPress Database Backup.  Out of all of the Twitter and Flickr plugins, these two had the most features and were the most customizable.
  • Depending on if a post is BC/AD (before relaunch / after relaunch) page elements resize to accommodate the 800px wide larger photos of days of yore.  (I had to think this one through a little bit – I used wp custom fields as a marker for needing the wider style).

Hope y’all enjoy it!
