Bouncing around inside the mixer.

I saw “I’m a Cyborg but that’s OK” (trailer) at the Asian Film Fest in NY. It’s Park Chanwook’s newest film, his latest since the Vengeance series (Oldboy, Lady Vengeance). Wow. I say. It’s like taking a cookie cutter romantic comedy from the US, Koreanizing it, throwing it in the blender with bullets, blood, mental insanity, and highly nuanced sexuality and romance. It was great. It’s available on DVD.

I went on some sort of date with an I’m In Like With You person. Meeting people is great, but dating is rough. I relate back to the micro/macrocosm metaphor theory. Everything is the same throughout life. In photography, out of 100 shots, 50 might be throw-aways, 10 are keepers but there’s one or 2 things wrong that either need some photoshop correction or I just should have shot better, and 1 shot out of the hunderd is a true keeper. Well, the same goes for dating and meeting people. I estimate the ratio to be about 1/100. One success out of one hundred.

Podcasts

Posted by Greg T. on June 18th, 2007 in Nerd Stuff

I love criticizing and love making things work better. So I’m standing, baking in the subway, waiting so that I can go home and bake some more, and get a podcast idea. I was listening to the Business Week Tech podcast–it’s like tech for your mom, if you know what I mean (no offense mom). Usually my mind is working quite a bit faster than the speed of talk, and usually I can’t verbalize well because my mind is trying to spout out something that’s 17 words and 2 thoughts ahead. I sound like a bumbling fool. So I thought, why not speed up podcasts…especially slow ones. I don’t mean Alvin and the Chipmunks style, but I’m pretty sure I could handle 25% faster on most podcasts. Then I thought, wow, what if I could speed it 2x or 3x faster, and still understand? I think I just invented something…speed listening.

Examples (courtesy of NPR): Here’s normal. Here’s fast ( 1.6x faster). Not too bad right? Here’s super fast
(2.083x). Yeah, not very relaxing but you get your shit done quick. I bet with a little practice, and a cleaner compression algorithm, I could get used to 3x.

Yay weekend

Posted by Greg T. on June 17th, 2007 in New York, This and that

Every weekend is filled with new food, new places, new people.

Beer pong, photo from a while back, is still admittedly fun.  (ilford xp2)

The Age

Posted by Greg T. on June 13th, 2007 in New York, Shot on Film

Informal polling gives me an age of approximatively 28; however, my real age is a snoot less. And that snoot makes a world of difference. I’m working on ways around such snootiness. (PS if you linked from I’m in like, please ignore this. )

Anybody who 1) has a sushi purse or 2) has any object that is not sushi that looks like sushi gets a frickin A in my book. PS, that’s Annie, she’s cool. She gave me a knife sharpener.  That would be a close-to-perfect Christmas gift, but she gave it to me in the context of ‘here ya go, I have a bunch.’ Completely out of the blue.  Cool.

Diggin In

Posted by Greg T. on June 12th, 2007 in CA/Home, Shot on Film

I’m settling in permanently at Motionbox. It’s pretty intense, because I’m so blistering edge that when I disengage (aka go home), I feel behind. Apparently there’s a huge YouTube meetup on 7.7.07 in NYC that I didn’t know about. Arg, that should be fun tho, maybe it’ll be mandatory market research for work. That’s pretty big news in the industry. I spend so much time at work playing with every other video site, debugging/testing ours, blogging or writing industry news or keeping track of my 100+ feeds in goog reader that I’m out of steam for gregtakayama.com. I almost wish I could post what I write at about work–it’s fairly well written with embeds and graphics–but I’d probably be violating my NDA.

Well here’s a picture of home. Framed pictures of doors with a window. (Sensia 400)

Crashes

Posted by Greg T. on June 9th, 2007 in New York, Shot on Film

From Consumerist, check this great library of Institute for Highway Safety crash test videos. Chances are, your car is in there. To see good test results look at any Japanese or European car. To see bad test results look at any American vehicle, especially trucks and SUVs.
