move on

Posted by Greg T. on November 30th, 2005 in Uncategorized

I’m undisciplined. I’m a procrastinator. But then again, isn’t everyone? People always seem to be 15 minutes late. That’s why we have a 3 am. If people didn’t procrastinate, nobody would need to stay up until 3am, so nobody would know if it even exists, let alone what to call it. But how does one quantify procrastination. If your work always turns out fine in the end, does procrastination matter?http://www.gregtakayama.com/blog/a

These are questions to which I’d like answers.

My distantly good friend Luke got a full ride for a masters program in England. Congrats to him! In a time of an unsecured future for myself, I can’t even imagine how satisfied he must feel. Luke I’m coming by NAPF to shake your hand and do tequila shots off of your keyboard.

Bangkok. Last day. I had a full additional day in Bangkok, because everyone had early morning flights and I had a late night flight. I spent the day wandering around Bangkok, walking through the malls, the food courts, the streets, places where there weren’t tourists. The entire day, I was jittery and nervous. I’d never felt so nervous about the end of a trip.

Bangkok. We all got massages. No not like that. It was nice, but I think massages are altruistic action. I felt like I should be giving something back besides money–perhaps because it is somewhat of a physically intimate exchange (no not like that, yes it was bangkok, but no not like that).

Oh bay area, how do I love thee. Break consisted of winning a suit, seeing an old friend, making most of Thanksgiving dinner, seeing another old friend, not going to H&M but rather staring at the outside and the ever present line for 2 hours (the line wasn’t that bad), Union Square tree lighting ceremony, nice dinner with old friends, meeting someone new, and a 5 year high school reunion.

Back to work and “editing” in sb.

FYI. Sushi Club will be on Dec 26th at David’s. Plan for it. Plan around it.

Moscone Center, SF. Just hanging out after the International Auto Show. The WRX got really ugly. Dear Subaru, please talk to Infiniti for design tips. Thanks.global.jpg
San Anselmo, CA. A new set of Global knifes. They were so sharp, they made the turkey look manufactured. I give them a 10/10. Almost as nice as high carbon sashimi knives…maybe nicer because you don’t have to dry them in an oven to prevent rust. Another cool global innovation…the honing piece is ceramic or stone instead of textured steel. It does a much better job.

Losing my ability to form coherent sentences

It’s hard to take a bad picture at the Getty. It’s a place of smoke and mirrors. I think Richard Meyer designed it for the digital camera revolution, which is to literally point and shoot.

Saw James Nachtwey at the Getty. We lucked out somehow with 3rd row center section seats. Front row basically. Nachtwey is practically a diety in the photo world. The selfless work that he’s done over the past 20 years led people to ask questions like “do you ever think there will be peace in the world?” and “when do you shoot film and when do you shoot digital?” What did I get out of it? I’m not sure yet, ask me in 20 years.

THIS IS REALLY COOL…Google text messaging service. You send a text to 46645 (googl) with a google type search as the text, and you get a text back with the answer. For instance, we were looking for Hawaiian bbq in Ventura driving home today. Instead of calling 411, we could have gotten the restuarant location and driving directions in a text from google. More about it here. PS. Sorry if everyone already knows about this…I just found out.

Saturday, on the set of “Six Iron.” Bode (I forget his real name) gets makeup applied to simulate an ass whoopin with a six iron.

I don’t answer restricted numbers.

DPed for Andrew’s 106 reject project. Got a really good feel for what the DVX100a can do. It needs a longer lens. Ok nobody really cares.

Getty tomorrow to heckle James Nachtwey, most awesome photojournalist to walk the earth. “Hey James, what’s your favorite f stop?” “Hey James why don’t you use a 70-200?”

Shot the UCSB men’s season opener on Friday night at the T-dome. It was pretty packed for a BBall game. I also got use of the stadium’s strobes, which are basically really powerful camera flashes mounted in the rafters above the court. The are triggered by a radio transmitter than you hook to your camera, so every time I’d take a picture the entire stadium would flash really brightly. It’s not noticable by the crowd, but you can actually see this on TV at almost every NBA or college game. If you watch closely you’ll see the image flicker to white for a frame or 2 a couple times every minute. That’s from photographer’s strobes. I actaully started noticing it so much that it became really annoying to watch basketball on TV (not that I watch basketball in the first place). Here are some pics:

Shooting into the strobes is a bad idea…but I still really like this picture. This is live action during the game.

Just some starters bumping chests and some cheerleaders trying to dust the ceiling in the thunderdome. They couldn’t stack girls high enough to reach. Too bad.

Career

Posted by Greg T. on November 18th, 2005 in Uncategorized

Nobody knows what they want to do as a career. Anybody who can answer, out of college, what they want to do as a career has closed part of themself off to the world. I take that back. There’s only one person I know who I truly believe wants to do one thing for the rest of his life. That’s Jason Chiu. He’ll be a commercial airline pilot and he’ll be in heaven. We were 6, at day care, and would pretend the swings were planes…not just “zoooooooom, I’m gonna shoot you down” planes, but 747-200′s radioing ATC requesting clearance for landing (in the sand beneath the swings). It was serious business…the preamble to Jason’s life and the punctuated version of my recess.

Chris: “Jack of all trades, master of none.”

Me: (thinking to self) “Fuck. That’s me.” (in a bad way)

bangkokfood1.jpg
Bangkok Thailand. I went to Your Place on Milpas, touted as the best Thai food in Santa Barbara. What was supposed to be curry noodles with pork, turned out to be some of the worst Chinese food I’ve had lately.

bangkokfood2.jpg
Bangkok, Thailand. Your Place isn’t that good, it’s just the only place. Thai food in Thailand wasn’t amazing, but at least it was real. Your Place is not Thai food even though they understood khap koon khrap.

my entries don’t deserve titles, just call them “hey you”

It’s a sad day when I sit for two minutes and can’t think of anything to write.

Kota Kinabalu, Borneo, Malaysia. Two girls run through an abandonded section of a “food court” area of a market. It smelled like curry, spit, outhouses, dining commons kitchen and expired meat.

Same place. Who do they think they’re trying to fool? Sounds sexual if you ask me.
