Almost home

In Bangkok right now spending another 2 days here b/c we couldn’t get the right flights from borneo. It’s good to revisit b/c now we don’t get taken advantage of as much. We only got half scammed outside of the Grand Palace, which is a huge tourist attraction in Bangkok. You can’t wear shorts inside, so some random guy outside says “no shorts, go to other entrance,” so we start walking away. But in fact we had been redirected to some sketchy tuk tuk (a motorized cart taxi vehicle) who wanted to take us on some scam tour of bangkok.
Compared to Malaysia, Bangkok has countless vendors everywhere constantly yelling at you, “Hey mista” or “You want water?” or “You want tour?” or “You want massage?” They are usually scams. Or they have to be bargained down 50% to actually get a deal.

Some of the deals aren’t bad. They have legit North Face and Lowe Alpine backpacks for about $18. I think I might pick one up.

Flying out tomorrow to Tokyo, 9 hour layover, then home.

I think pictures would make these posts far more interesting. In a couple days….

Singapore

I wish I had some way to post some of the pictures that I’ve been taking. I think I’m doing pretty well.

Cambodia is the complete opposite of Singapore. Singapore is like the best of every Asain country rolled into an island the size of San Diego. There are tons of nice cars…a new lamborghini parked outside our hotel last night. Lots of money and business here. You can acutally drink the water.

Next stop Kuala Lumpur then Taman Negara National Park which is supposed to be spectacular jungle.

And I’m off

Finished moving out/in. It took 3 days. Pulled an all nighter to drive back to the bay, got in around 5am. Packed, made sure all my gear was working and I think I’m good to go. Typhoid shots-check. Antimalarial meds-check. Camera-check. Packed everything for 19 days into domestic carry on requirements – a rollaway and a small backpack. Pretty happy b/c normally I have no concept of how/how much to pack. Thailand, Cambodia, Malaysia and Singapore in no particular order, with David, KT, and Claudine here we come! I’m more tired than stoked right now, but I’m sure that will change very soon. See ya in October!

ps. If you need to reach me, the best way is to email me.

Ever have somthing that bothers you so much, all you can do is sit and let your mind fuck the thought for five minutes or so? You snap out of it and get on with life but little things still remind you…a broken promise, a broken ring.

This is a port that the all day ferry in Okinawa stopped at. People waiting to board…there were alot of pineapples waiting to board also.

Good times tonight.

Rey and I made a stupid stop motion movie. My only goal was to make a movie in HD (it’s 720p, the 1080p codec isn’t working). But hey that’s about 2x the resolution of a dvd or 4x that of normal television.

We’ll come up w/ something w/ a better script but for now…
hdchips.avi (57 megs, 16 seconds) sorry no compression, too lazy.

(Requires the newest windows media or quicktime players that support hd)

Yeah that’s right, it’s 720p. Made w/ the old rebel…gonna kill that shutter making a stop motion movie.

Two articles. One from Scientific American in 2001–a major hurricane in New Orleans could cause exactly what has happened (sans looting, rioting and mayhem). Another from National Geogrphic predicting the same situtation. Reading the first four paragraphs, I thought it was about Katrina, but this article was written BEFORE Katrina. Crazy.

Hundreds of thousands of paper cranes are displayed at the Hiroshima Peace memorial park.
